What inspired you to serve?
I was aimless after high school – I didn’t have a clue as to what I wanted to do after high school. The US Air Force seemed to be a good place to start until I decided what I wanted to do in life.
I wanted to travel – Since I wasn’t the child of wealthy parents, my choices for traveling the world would have been very limited. I chose what I believed at the time would be a good opportunity to see the “world.” This did happen … although not quite in the manner which I expected.
Finally, I had several relatives that served in all periods, from WWI through the Gulf War.
What did you do while serving in the Air Force?
I have had only one job for the 29 years I was enlisted – I joined the Air Force Fire Protection Field.
Did you visit any other countries?
Yes, I’ve visited countries and cities that include Paris, Milan, Spain, England, Wales, Scotland, Japan, Korea, Germany, Poland, Panama, and Canada.
If you had it to do all over again, what would you have done differently?
Certainly, I would have joined a lot sooner and did more Active Duty Deployments. I would have also served in more countries during war time as opposed to getting deployed stateside. Overall, not much regret as I truly enjoyed my time.
Thank you to Anthony Owens, (U.S. Air Force veteran, SMSgt ret.), for sharing his story and to all veterans who have served this country, past and present.
